Apeksha Rao aka Shilpa Rao was born on 11 April 1984 in Jamshedpur. She completed her schooling from Little Flower School and Loyola School. She has a Master’s degree in Applied Statistics from St.Xavier’s College, Mumbai, before working as a jingle singer for three years. The singer comes from a simple family background. Her father S Venkat Rao held a degree in music and always wished to imbibe the same talent in his daughter. She also took her music classes from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan who was also the teacher of playback singer Hariharan.

Born in Jamshedpur on 11 April, the singer considers her father as her biggest inspiration in her music career. Her father S Venkat Rao holds a degree in music and he has tutored and instructed Shilpa from her childhood to improve her singing skills. She was taught to understand the ‘nuances’ of different ragas by her father. The singer is the recipient of ‘ITA Award for best Singer’.
